Emily, you’ve captured the conflict of doing v. being perfectly. Good luck on your book tour!!

Emily, the first two paragraphs of this post describes me, exactly. I feel like I'm breaking out in hives every time I go to Substack right now! Hence, why I've been stalling on the interview we were going to do together. It's good to know I'm not alone, and thank you for so vividly describing what I'm feeling. Let's try again in 2025, after your book launch and tour! 🌟💫

Haha, yesss exactly I *completely* get it :) Definitely try again in 2025 - thanks for reading Erin and happy new year!!

I can relate to so much of this! I love rules and structures, but my energy to adhere to all of them as I've grown older has fallen off a bit. I feel like I'm always sort of "failing" at whatever balance is these days. I finished the 1st draft of my first novel this year...but had to super focus and "ignore" everything else, including my Substack, to get that done. Congratulations on your book!!

Exactly! And HUGE CONGRATS on finishing the first draft!! That's incredible and well worth "ignoring" the other things (IMO). Thanks for reading Maria!!

Omg such a great analogy of the internet as shopping at Target! Totally speaks to me.

Also very interesting to take part of your thoughts on living in both the “regulated” corporate world and the “unregulated” creative world. I often find it difficult to rely entirely on self-motivation and would probably need some homemade rules to make that work. How does that work for you with your history of bad experiences with rules? Would be interesting if you could dive deeper into that. Sounds so wonderful living “beyond rules and closer to the gut”, but how do you do that and still get things done lol?

Thank you for so much interesting reading this year! Looking forward to the next.

Thanks Lotta!! It's sooo hard to self motivate and to be clear I def still lean on rules! :) Just trying to be a little more conscious of which rules feel aligned with what I actually want, and more flexible / gentle if I can't hit a goal or don't have energy on a particular day.

Thank you so much for reading as always and happy new year!! <3
